Structure Research 2025 ESG Report examines environmental impact of the global Data Centre Market
Structure Research released its 2025 ESG Report, analyzing the environmental impact of 26 data centre operators and 9 hyperscale platforms globally and here are some of the highlights:
Data centre energy consumption rose to 310.6 TWh in 2024, but carbon emissions per energy unit decreased due to increased use of renewable and carbon-free energy.
Hyperscalers now source 91% of their energy from renewables, while data centre providers reached 62%.
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) improved, with data centre providers averaging 1.38 in 2024, and hyperscalers leading at 1.22.
Water consumption increased by 9.6% over five years, driven by liquid cooling needs for AI workloads and higher rack densities.
The report introduced the Structure Research Sustainability Quadrant (SRSQ) to benchmark providers on transparency, efficiency, and renewable energy use.
ESG & Sustainability reporting is becoming more common for data centres, but the report calls for more detailed and region-specific disclosures and serves as a key resource for understanding the environmental challenges and progress in the data centre industry.
